Spain: A Digital Nomad’s Dream Destination

Last month, Spain announced plans to introduce a new ‘digital nomad visa’ for remote workers wishing to relocate to Spain. The move sees legislators attempt to bridge the gap left in the wake of two seismic events for the country: the Covid-19 pandemic and the UK’s exit from the European Union. The former saw the explosion of remote working, as the world was forced indoors and online. The latter has left a notable absence of foreign workers; as non-EU citizens are only permitted within the Schengen area for a period of 90 days for tourist purposes, meaning working is prohibited.

What is a Digital Nomad?

The term ‘digital nomad’ refers to someone who works online with no fixed place of work, such as an entrepreneur or freelancer. In particular, digital nomads are known to move from one place to another, often for networking purposes.

How Will it Work?

It is not entirely clear what the process will be for obtaining one, as the visa is yet to be formalised into law. However, in line with typical visa processes, it is likely that applicants will need to attend their local Spanish embassy or consulate to apply, and also register with the authorities within 30 days of their arrival in Spain.

It is anticipated that the visa will last for 1 year, with options to renew, subject to requirements. It has also been suggested that under the scheme, visa-holders will benefit from reduced taxation and other incentives.

Why Spain?

Needless to say, the quality of life in Spain is one of the best in the world. The climate, coastline and incredible food are only a few of the undeniable draws of the Spanish lifestyle. Moreover, most cities and major towns are well-developed, with access to WiFi and a diverse population. English is widely spoken and the cost of living can be relatively low compared to other major European cities.

The digital nomad visa is an exciting prospect for those looking to soak up the sun, and practice their Spanish whilst working. And weekends, you ask? What better way to spend them than hopping on a helicopter or jet with Jet Marbella and exploring the multitude of magical destinations on your doorstep.
