Summer Solstace: La Noche de San Juan

Summer Solstice: San Juan

If you’re lucky enough to be in Marbella this week, you’ll be hard pressed to miss the fiery festival of San Juan, which is celebrated on beaches across the entire country. This years event is heavily anticipated, after two years of suspension due to the pandemic.

What is the significance of La Noche de San Juan?

The festival marks the beginning of summer, this year falling on the eve of the 23rd of June, which is the longest day and shortest night of the year. The celebration actually is rooted in pagan tradition, and combines the elements of fire, water and earth in spectacular Spanish style.

Across Spain, bonfires of San Juan are burned on the beaches, intended to protect and purify. For this one night, the City Council of Andalucía have authorized private bonfires and fireworks on Marbella’s beaches. Although traditions vary across regions of Spain, ‘fire-jumping’ is common, with participants believing that three jumps over the bonfire will burn away your problems and welcome good luck.

The water element is traditionally a cleanser and purifier and it is thought that the sea water is at its most pure on this mystical eve, so those wishing to heal various ailments and wash away bad spirits will run into the sea after midnight.

There will also be live music, food, drink, neon-body painting. Whether you’re superstitious or not, it’s a great opportunity to experience a true Spanish fiesta.
