Marbella’s Best Day Trips

Marbella has an abundance to offer, from a vibrant nightlife, historic old quarter, and endless supply of magical beaches. However, if you find yourself intrigued by what lies beyond the classic tourist hotspots, there are plenty of gems located nearby, perfect for a day trip.

Ronda (63km from Marbella)

Ronda’s famous Puente Nuevo.

A rough 1 hour drive inland from Marbella lies the historic town of Ronda. It is perhaps most famous for its 18th century ‘Puente Nuevo’ bridge that straddles the dramatic gorge below it. It is also considered the birthplace of bullfighting, and the Plaza de Toros bullring can be explored as a museum.

Ojen (9.5km from Marbella)

The famous ‘white village’ is located a short 10km away from the coast. It is famous for producing some of most famed olive oil in the country.

Tarifa (103km from Marbella)

Tarifa is the southernmost point of Spain and Europe, sitting within eye-sight of Africa on clear days. Due to its positioning, Tarifa attracts water and wind sport enthusiasts from all over the world as it has consistently strong winds. Over 10km of white sandy beach stretches along the west side of the town, making it a perfect spot to watch the kite surfers.

Tarifa is a hotspot for wind and watersport enthusiasts.

Gibraltar (78km from Marbella)

Gibraltar, a.k.a. ‘the Rock’ is a slice of Britain in Spain. It sits about 45 minutes along the coast from Marbella and to this day is one of the United Kingdom’s overseas territories. Though you will be required to cross the border (make sure you bring your passport or national ID), Gibraltar is the perfect day trip for those looking for a complete change from Spanish culture. Visitors can expect red telephone boxes, English street signs and classic British shops. What perhaps isn’t so English are the thousands of monkeys that roam free.

Granada and Sierra Nevada (180km from Marbella)

A little further from Marbella is the Andalucían city of Granada, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It has a unique atmosphere, owing to the Moorish and Islamic influence that once occupied the region. Its Alhambra palace is one of the most visited tourist sites in Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Depending on the time of year, it is worth taking a trip up to Sierra Nevada, which is a thriving ski resort during the winter months.
